Prep Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 19 mins Total Time: 24 mins
Servings 6
Ingredients
  • 2 cup All purpose flour (or 1 cup flour and 1 cup blue corn meal)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tbsp Baking powder
  • 3/4 cup Warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
  1. Making the bread
    1. In a bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Add the warm water and stir. Remove the dough from the bowl and knead for 5 minutes, until the dough is soft but not sticky. I had to add a little more flour.
    2. Form 6 small balls of dough, flatten into discs (about a 1/4 inch thick).
    3. Pour 1 inch of oil into a deep skillet. Heat over medium-high. Fry the dough until golden brown on each side. I recommend just doing one at a time.
    4. Remove from the oil and place it on a paper towel (to absorb the excess).
    5. Serve while still warm!

You can make these sweet if you would like as well. Just top with honey and/or powdered sugar.

Notes

If you make the version with blue cornmeal they may not rise as much as those made from just regular flour. I recommend pulsing it in a food processor and then sifting the blue corn before adding it. However, they taste great!

Not sure where to get blur cornmeal? I recommend https://bowandarrowbrand.com
